2008 Barbie Walking Horse Tawny & Foal

In July 2017, I wrote a post where I boil washed and cleaned up my three horses. After I wrote that, I put the horses away and proceed to forget all about them. Until now! After watching Barbie and Her Sisters in a Pony Tale, I am in a bit of a ‘horse mood,’ so I decided to finally write a feature post on them.

Here is the before:

And here is the after:

If you would like to know how I achieved this, you can read the original post here.

Now, onto the feature post! The Barbie Walking Horse Tawny & Baby set was produced in 2008. You can watch the advertisement here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-o1uzFTb7I

Since it has been ten (10!) years since this set was produced, obviously I have sold quite a lot of the pieces.

Here you can see what the set originally came with. I don’t have the doll anymore, or any of the clothes. I probably have the hair clips somewhere, but I couldn’t find them, so we will have to do without! It really was an ugly doll; her arms were bent on both sides, so she was always standing awkwardly.

Since I don’t have the Barbie doll anymore, Princess Aimee will have to fill-in! Look at her cute outfit! She is wearing boots from my old Rock n Royals Rayna doll, and a dress from my 2017 School Fashion Pack. Aren’t the little horses so cute?

Here is the little foal. I must admit, I haven’t stored her in the best condition so her tail got a little ruffled up.

The foal’s legs are articulated so she can sit down.

Look at her sweet face! There is a little garland of flowers around the horse’s neck. Realistic? Not really, but cute all the same! The foal is also wearing pink and blue eyeshadow, because Barbie.

And here is the mother, Tawny. Tawny is featured in Life in the Dreamhouse and many other Barbie material, like books, magazines and other playsets.

I added the streak of nail polish to make her more original. The bridle and reins can be removed very easily.

The saddle and saddle blanket are stuck to the horse. I think the design on the saddle blanket is really cute! The pink adds a bit of interest.

See this little attachment here? You use it to connect the two horses together.

Like this! You can press the little flower button (behind the saddle) and the horses will walk together, if the batteries are new enough. Tawny can also walk on her own.

The batteries are stored underneath the horse.

Princess Aimee puts on her riding helmet. Safety first!

The playset came with a bunch of carrots. These are really helpful for cooking dioramas -it’s not often that Mattel makes raw vegetables like this.

The bottle is for the foal.

This is the brush. It’s a bit difficult to get Aimee’s fingers in there, I think the original doll must have had a different hand shape.

The strip of plastic at the back acts as a seatbelt. When the horse walks by itself, it goes pretty fast and the doll would fall off without it!

Aimee loves horse-riding.

I keep thinking ‘oh I should do a horse photostory soon,’ but then I realise I don’t actually know that much about horses! When I was writing this up, I actually had to google ‘is there a difference between a foal and a pony?’

Spoiler: Yes, there is.

Barbie Walking Horse

Overall, I really like my horses! I like Tawny’s palomino coat, instead of the standard grey that is usually used for Barbie horses. I like how it comes with the saddle attached and I like how the bridle isn’t bright pink! I also like all the accessories -I think they are realistic and helpful to tell the story.

I don’t really have a use for the walking function so I’m honestly not even sure if it still works! But it’s definitely a cute idea, if I was giving this to a child I’m sure they would have lots of fun with it.

What do you think? Do you have any doll horses?

  1. Wow! I’ve never even heard of this set before! It looks really cool!

I don’t know if I’m remembering this correctly, but I believe the last time Mattel featured Tawny was in Life in the Dreamhouse. I’m trying to remember any recent Barbie material that mentions anything at all about horses, but the only thing I can think of is Spirit and Beauty from Barbie and Her Sisters in a Puppy Chase.

Since then, I don’t think we’ve seen a horse at all, but I think Barbie mentioned in one of her vlogs that Taffy and the other three puppies, Blissa the cat, and the hermit crab (name unstated) Ken gave her when she first moved to Malibu as a “welcome gift”, were her family’s only pets. (Or at least that’s what she implied.) I wonder what happened to Tawny and her foal?

Also, I don’t know if you’ve heard of this, but apparently, sometime around 2007-2008, Mattel made another set featuring a pet, only this time it was Teresa and her cat Mika (if that was the name?). I don’t think Mattel has ever said anything else about Teresa having a pet cat, but did you know she used to have a dog? It was featured in the “Glam N’ Groom” line from 1999, and it was named Ruby. Also, in the same line, Christie had a dog named Keely and Barbie had a dog named Lacey, not Taffy! (Who I can assume was neither thought of nor produced yet, since Taffy’s first appearance was in 2006 or something,) Oh, it’s all very confusing!

    1. Yes, I have heard of Mika in the Barbie magazines. I think she had another one too? Tika or something? I can’t remember.

I have read about Barbie’s dog Lacey, too, from storybooks and again the magazines, she’s a chihuahua. I didn’t realise she was from back in 1999! That’s such a long time ago; the last I heard about her was 2015.

I think it’s funny how Barbie has “lost” all these pets over the years -Sequin the poodle isn’t mentioned anymore, and Ms Honey is …idk what is even happening with her!

They should just stick to a core lineup haha.

      1. This dog named Lacey certainly wasn’t a chihuahua. She was a relatively big dog, in comparison to Barbie, that is, and had almost golden “blonde” fur, to match Barbie’s hair or something. And she came with a pink leash. (At least, I think it was pink.) You could probably find pictures on Google Images. (Sorry, I don’t know how to provide a link, lol!)

I’ve heard of the Lacey you’re mentioning, but only in the storybooks. I don’t know what ever happened to her, or Sequin! (Who, if I recall correctly, was only featured in Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale )

I’m pretty sure I’ve heard of Ms. Honey, but I can’t remember what she looks like. Isn’t Chelsea’s puppy named Honey? They probably just reused the name because I guess that’s easier than having to go though the process of trademarking a new name.

Now here is something totally random but I thought I’d mention it anyway because it reflects the need of a canon lineup, as you mentioned. Apparently, in, like, 1998 or 1999, Mattel decided to give Barbie an infant sister named Krissy. I have absolutely no idea why they thought this would be a good idea. Then, a few years later, in 2003, Mattel discontinued her, because that’s what they do to almost all their characters. (Except Barbie, of course, but almost everyone else!)

I don’t know if Teresa had another cat named Tika or not. The only Tika I’ve heard of is Rosella’s baby elephant from The Island Princess!

      2. Ah, I forgot about Chelsea’s puppy! I was referring to the dog that is always mentioned on Barbie’s Instagram, she looks a bit different. Sequin was mentioned in a lot of storybooks / activity books but I don’t think she lasted after 2014. Rip Sequin 😂

I heard about Krissy, although I was too little to remember her actually being in the stores, of course. Sam and Mickey have a parody series onYouTube about Barbie and they mention her a lot. It’s funny; they make lots of references to Barbie’s parents, Tutti and Todd, Blaine, etc.

I don’t understand why Mattel creates characters and then dumps them a few years later… Don’t they have a long-term plan? If I was in charge, I would make one!

  2. Oh! I now know what dog you’re talking about! I was thinking of the dog named Honey that she had in the late 90s. The dog was supposed to be an English sheepdog and seriously reminds me of Max, Prince Eric’s dog from The Little Mermaid.

I honestly didn’t know Sequin was mentioned in storybooks! I thought she was only in A Fashion Fairytale!

I, too, was not around to see Krissy on store shelves (I was born in 2002), but I’ve researched most of Barbie’s old family members online and have seen pictures of her. Honestly, though, how many sisters does Barbie really need? I would think four kids would be sufficient for Mattel!

I’ve heard of the Sam and Mickey series on YouTube, but I’ve never watched any of their videos. I hear they’re really popular though!

Yeah, I would make a long-term plan, as well. What do you think yours might be? Personally, I’d probably stick to Barbie and her three sisters, their puppies (Not talking, Lol!), and definitely include Midge, Teresa, Christie, and their Aunt Millicent. I actually kinda have, though, since I’ve written some Barbie “fanfiction”, but I’ve never posted it online.
